PCB Panelization: Key Considerations & Optimization Strategies for PCBA

In PCB design, panelization is a critical step that directly impacts manufacturing feasibility and cost control. For professionals in industrial and automation electronics, mastering PCB panelization isn’t just a technical detail—it’s a way to ensure efficient production, reduce waste, and deliver reliable PCBA solutions. Let’s break down why panelization matters, when it’s necessary, and the essential tips to optimize your PCB panels.

01 Why Is PCB Panelization Necessary?

Core Reasons for Panelization

1. Meet Manufacturing Equipment Requirements: Single PCBs smaller than 50mm on one side often fail to meet the minimum processing size of production machines, halting manufacturing. Panelization combines small boards into equipment-compatible sizes. Meanwhile, the maximum panel size should be controlled (typically ≤700mm×600mm) to maintain efficiency in processes like SMT.

2. Reduce Material Waste: Irregularly shaped PCBs or multiple PCBs with identical processes cause significant material waste if produced individually. Panelization optimizes layout to maximize board space utilization, cutting down on unnecessary waste.

When Is Panelization Required?

Panelization is mandatory if: the single PCB is under 50mm on one side (failing equipment size standards); the board has an irregular shape (reducing individual production efficiency); or multiple PCBs share the same processes (to save costs and boost output).

Is Non-Panelization Feasible?

Non-panelization works only if the single PCB meets minimum equipment size, has a regular shape, and offers high material utilization. However, for small, irregular, or multi-spec PCBs with identical processes, non-panelization leads to production challenges and higher costs—making panelization the practical choice.

02 Key PCB Panelization Considerations

– Panel Shape: Aim for square panels to avoid excessive length-width ratios, enhancing stability and efficiency during manufacturing.

– Panelization Method: Regular-shaped boards use V-CUT panelization. Irregular boards, which can’t use V-CUT, rely on mouse-bite panelization.

– Process Edge Setup: If components are within 3mm of the board edge, add process edges—usually using the longer side. This is a common practice for single boards to ensure smooth production.

– Marks & Holes: Add 3 mark points and 4 non-metallized holes on the outer process edges. Diagonal mark points should be slightly offset, not aligned in a straight line.

– Space Reservation: Leave over 0.5mm between components and V-CUT lines to protect components from tool damage. Board gaps must account for component widths, especially for edge-mounted connectors.

03 PCB Panelization Optimization Strategies

Boost Panel Utilization

Maximizing panel utilization is key to cost reduction:

– Optimize Layout: Use step-and-repeat technology for tight layout . For non-gold-plated edge PCBs, standard spacing is 100mils (2.54mm) for milling and zero spacing for scoring. Scoring creates grooves between panels, enabling tight layout and eliminating milling path space.

– Design Rational Borders: Single/double-layer PCBs need 500mils (1.27cm) borders; multi-layer boards require 750mils (1.905cm). Impedance-controlled PCBs need an extra 1-inch (2.54cm) border for test coupons.

– Adopt Standard Panel Sizes: In North America, common sizes are 12×18”, 18×24” (most popular), and 21×24”. In Asia, custom sizes are available. Larger panels often lower per-unit processing costs.

Consider Special Requirements

Account for custom needs: Impedance-controlled PCBs need extra border space for test coupons; military-standard PCBs require additional test samples. For assembly, keep a 0.375”-500mils (9.525mm-12.7mm) border around panels, with breakable assembly borders to protect PCBs.
