In the field of electronic manufacturing, PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) shipments often rely on international express delivery to ensure timely delivery to customers worldwide. However, international express delivery involves complex processes and numerous links, requiring special attention to a series of precautions to ensure the safe, fast, and smooth arrival of PCBA products at their destination.
1、 Key points of packaging process
Anti static packaging: PCBA is extremely sensitive to static electricity, and even small static discharges can penetrate electronic components, causing irreparable damage. Therefore, it is necessary to use anti-static materials for packaging, such as anti-static bags, shielding bags, etc. Anti static bags can dissipate static charges through special coatings, while shielding bags can effectively shield external static interference, especially suitable for long-distance transportation or PCBA containing high-sensitivity components.
Moisture proof treatment: Moisture may cause oxidation and short circuit of metal components on PCBA, affecting product performance. When packaging, vacuum or nitrogen encapsulation can be used to isolate oxygen and moisture, which is particularly suitable for maritime environments or situations that require long-term storage. At the same time, place silicone desiccant inside the sealed bag to absorb residual moisture and control the internal humidity below 10% RH.
Seismic buffering design: Vibration and collision during transportation may cause components on the PCBA to loosen or detach. Pearl cotton, bubble pad or customized foam lining shall be used to fill the gaps in the packaging box to prevent the product from shaking during transportation. For vertically placed PCBA, the number of stacking layers should not exceed two, and partitions should be inserted to prevent compression deformation. For chip intensive or high-frequency circuit boards, it is recommended to use independent tray packaging to avoid collision of component pins, and to mark the “fragile” label in a prominent position on the outer packaging.
2、 The Importance and Content of Document Preparation
Commercial Invoice: This is an indispensable document in international express delivery, which needs to list in detail the name, model, quantity, unit price, total price, and other information of the PCBA. The invoice content should be accurate and formatted in accordance with the requirements of the destination country’s customs. The product code should correspond precisely to enable the customs to accurately classify the goods and calculate tariffs. If sent by a company, commercial invoices usually need to be stamped with the company seal; Personal mail requires signature confirmation.
Customs declaration form (CN22/CN23, etc.): Fill in the customs declaration form accurately according to the requirements of the courier company, clearly declare the detailed information of PCBA, including product use, material, production location, etc. The customs declaration information must be consistent with the commercial invoice to ensure smooth customs clearance. Any false or ambiguous declaration may result in the package being detained, fined, or even returned by customs.
Special Item Certification (if applicable): If the PCBA product contains special components or materials, corresponding certification documents may be required. For example, if lithium batteries are included, a lithium battery testing report that meets international transportation standards must be provided to prove its safety. Due to the risk of fire or explosion of lithium batteries under specific conditions, international transportation is strictly controlled.
3: Selection and considerations of logistics methods
Air transportation: Air transportation has fast speed and is suitable for urgent orders and high-value PCBA products. In general, the transportation time is around 3-7 days, which can quickly deliver products to all parts of the world. But its shipping cost is relatively high, and there are certain restrictions on the weight and size of the goods. When choosing air transportation, it is necessary to consider the urgency of the goods and the budget comprehensively.
International express delivery (such as DHL, FedEx, etc.): International express delivery companies provide convenient door-to-door services with fast speeds, usually delivered within 3-5 days. They have a wide service network and efficient logistics system worldwide, with strong customs clearance capabilities. But the cost is also relatively high, suitable for small batches of PCBA samples or urgent small orders. Different international express delivery companies may have different advantages in different regions. For example, DHL has fast routes and strong customs clearance capabilities in Europe, while FedEx has obvious advantages in the Americas. When choosing, it is necessary to evaluate the destination.
Sea freight: The sea freight cost is relatively low, suitable for large quantities of PCBA goods with less urgent time requirements. The transportation time varies depending on the destination and may take around 15-45 days. However, the risks faced by goods during sea transportation are relatively high, such as moisture and potential damage caused by prolonged transportation. Therefore, when using sea freight, it is necessary to strengthen packaging protection and consider purchasing transportation insurance. Meanwhile, the booking process for sea freight is relatively complex and requires advance planning and sufficient time reservation.
