Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is the heart of modern PCB assembly—and also where most hidden defects begin. Tiny solder joints, complex component packages, and high-speed placement mean even a minor issue can lead to costly field failures later.
At Fumax, we don’t wait for problems to show up. Our electronic manufacturing process includes three key steps to detect potential SMT defects before they turn into real failures—saving our customers time, money, and reputation.
Step 1: Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) – Precision in Every Pixel
AOI is the first and most powerful line of defense. High-resolution cameras capture every solder joint and component position, comparing them to golden reference images within milliseconds.
What we look for:
Misaligned or missing components
Tombstoning and solder bridging
Incorrect polarity or orientation
Insufficient or excessive solder paste
Why it matters: Early optical inspection helps our PCB assembly engineers correct placement parameters and stencil design before mass production. It’s the quickest way to catch visual defects while the process is still adjustable.
Step 2: X-Ray Inspection – Seeing Beneath the Surface
Some defects hide where the eye can’t see—under BGAs, QFNs, or power pads. That’s where X-ray inspection steps in.
What we detect:
Voids inside solder joints
Hidden shorts between pads
Incomplete wetting or open circuits
Fumax advantage: We analyze X-ray images not only for defects but also for solder volume distribution and alignment accuracy. This helps us fine-tune electronic design recommendations, such as thermal via patterns or pad geometry, to prevent repeat issues in future builds.
Even if a board passes AOI and X-ray, electrical or mechanical stress can still expose weak joints or design oversights. That’s why every project at Fumax includes tailored functional testing.
Our testing covers:
Power-up verification
Signal integrity and communication checks
Load and temperature stress simulation
By verifying performance under realistic conditions, we ensure that what passes the test bench will also pass the customer’s final product qualification—closing the gap between electronic manufacturing and end-user reliability.
From Detection to Prevention
Detecting SMT defects is only part of the job; preventing them is the real goal. That’s why Fumax integrates inspection feedback into both electronic design and DFM (Design for Manufacturability) reviews. Our one-stop service—from PCB layout validation to assembly and testing—ensures your boards perform flawlessly from prototype to production.
